Mahiyana City burns.
A few Rimici Capell troops are caught by surprise by the Soldiers of Kesserai, the army carrying out Ogou Badagri's orders to put all opposition to the sword and leave no stone upon another. Finding the gates closed, but managing to flee to the walls, the trainee bowmen of Rimici Capell give an impressive showing as they fight desperately for their lives; the majority of the Rimici Capell forces escape over the walls on an improvised rope ladder, as the Soldiers of Kesserai count their many casualties in a slightly stunned fashion.
From the speech at the funeral service of two members of the 3rd Horseless Dragoons:
We are gathered here today to mourn the passing of two of our fellow soldiers, and recount their bravery and daring which led to the successful withdrawal of the majority of Rimici Capell forces caught in Mahiyana City at the start of this regrettable season.
Imagine, if you would, Mahiyana City intact: the practice fields, next to the barracks, being currently unoccupied - the recruits are out on some kind of marching exercise - we have set up for a co-operative exercise with the 1st Kamakuran Reserves. As they are attempting to learn the proper use of shields, and we are attempting to learn the proper use of bows, some obvious synergies presented themselves, and thus we were arranged when the first tendrils of smoke suggested that something might be wrong.
We immediately dispatched one of the Kamakurans to check on the situation; however, the nature of our predicament became quite apparent when the Soldiers of Kesserai showed up to burn down the barracks. Yes, I did say the Soldiers of Kesserai. They appear to be some kind of cultists, following a demon who used to be the colony governor, or some such; certainly they were quite keen that we might want to pact to their master to save our own lives.
Obviously, we politely refuse, and leave in rather a hurry; however, the unsporting cultists have locked and barred the gates. Never mind - we have our bows, and they haven't secured the _inside_ of the walls...
It all goes rather well for a while - some of their archers, who were distinctly better than us with their bows, but had the disadvantage of having lost the high ground, decide to engage us in a bow duel, which does not go well for them. But, as we should have known, this proves to be a distraction - suddenly there are Gnollish spearmen everywhere, rounding us up like some kind of cattle!
Fortunately, we are almost done with our improvised rope ladder - we lost a lot of good uniform jackets that way, but it was likely the only thing which saved any of our lives. Unfortunately, the Gnolls have also brought a unit of pistoleers.
The dear departed whose lives we celebrate here today - they stood very bravely holding the improvised ladder, already bleeding from well-aimed pistol fire and knowing they would not live out the day, for the whole area had become hostile territory and there was no-one to treat their wounds. Thus, they preserved the lives of those who would otherwise have had to face the pistols and spears for longer to do that duty.
We understand that the 1st Kamakuran Reserves are also in mourning for the ten of their number who threw themselves upon the spears of the Gnolls in order that the swordsmen could close and rid the world of the pestilent cultists - and we salute their bravery also. Barely a quarter of the spear-gnolls were standing by the time the last Kamakuran escaped from those walls.
So, it's like this.
First we shut all the gates. Then we start burning things. Lots of running and screaming. Specially from the Kamakuran peasents; the Gnoll residents were more resigned, less squeaky about it all. Guess anyone who's left here's been through a lot already.
Then we head over to the barracks, 'cos leaving even practice weapons lying around ain't smart when burnin' a city and killin' everyone. There's some Rimici Capell hanging around here; looks like some Flembic are practicing shooting at some Kamakurans, who are practicing using their shields to not get shot, along with a bunch of Gnollish recruits being put through their paces. They're not stupid; they take one look at us and clear straight out.
Guess we should have wondered where they thought they were going.
Next thing we know, the bastards are up on the walls. I mean, we shut the gates and the sally ports and they weren't gettin' out of the city in a hurry, but we figured most of the peasants didn't have the balls to climb over the walls and get out like that, so I guess we didn't pay enough attention to securing the towers and inside doors and stuff.
So now they're up on the walls with bows. They ain't any good with them yet, but it's still a bastard. Mowi 8th manage to nail a bunch of them, but gettin' in an archery contest with someone standin' on a wall is bloody stupid. Pins 'em down while the Krull Unit get it together and head up to do them in the face, though. Should've seen the look on their faces when half of Krull Unit 2 shows up from each side and there's nowhere to go but through a bunch of angry gnolls - or down...
Turns out, though, when you corner one of 'em skinny Kamakuran kids, they fight like, well, devils - not quite as hard maybe, but there were a whole bunch of 'em. Sword against spear on a nice narrow path usually ain't a good thing for the swordsman, specially as the Shari Militia were backin' the spears up with a nice volley of pistol fire, but that counts on the enemy not bein' fucking crazy and one of 'em charging onto the spears to keep 'em busy while the others press forward.
So that's why the Krull Unit 2 is down to five Gnolls, and the Shari Militia lost a couple, and we don't have the Mowi 8th any more.
Oh, and those Flembic bastards were busy sticking a rope over the edge while the Kamakurans were getting in our faces, so a whole bunch of them managed to run off out of our nice little trap, too. I think a couple of them were bleeding good by the time they got out, but we didn't round up a single Flembic; we've only got ten skewered Kamakurans in return for the whole stupid fight.
Sorry, boss. We did get some peasants for you and we did burn the place down but good after the Rimici Capell boys legged it. That's something, right?
Mahiyana City burns.

Finding the gates closed, but managing to flee to the walls, the trainee bowmen of Rimici Capell give an impressive showing as they fight desperately for their lives; but it is a futile display of defiance, and there is nothing they can do which will stand in the way of the destruction sweeping across New Bantustan.
